Noise, burnouts, dope smoking By Sarla Donovan BONE-SHAKING DUB music, bong smoking, squealing tyres, shouting and screaming. Just another Wednesday night in suburban Huntsbury. And Thursday night and Friday night and Saturday night. Residents of Vista Pl and Huntsbury Ave say they feel under siege from young drivers who park up at the scenic spot to socialise, listen to music and smoke marijuana. One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said there were
sometimes five or six vehicles parked up. She said they’ve been advised by police to phone 111 when there is a problem. “Sometimes police come up, but not that often. “THe (youths) enter people’s properties and use the area as a toilet. There’s evidence in trees and bushes below our property – toilet paper, soggy bundles, cigarette butts and ends of joints. “You start to question your security when you see young guys running around entering
properties. Often they’re looking for a hose to fill their bongs with but they could be looking to break in or suss a property out.” Residents contacted Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board chairwoman Karolin Potter (right) in despair last month after putting in regular calls to police about the disruptive noise. Ms Potter told a city council meeting about the issue last Thursday and said it had been

happening for months. “We’ve got a real problem up there with people in cars smoking obscure substances and playing dub music at top (volume) and the local residents calling the police most nights. Last night they were there until 3am.” She told the Southern View it was happening five nights out of seven and sometimes during the day as well. “I’ve been up there and I
parked next to a boy smoking a bong. He didn’t care.” THe board is trying to organise a meeting with residents, council staff and police to come up with some solutions. “We really wish we could resolve (this) issue. We’re trying to get a meeting between traffic engineers, police and us going. It’s very difficult to get police to come to meetings,” Ms Potter told city councillors. Residents say the music has a deep, thumping bass which they can hear above the volume of their televisions.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK HUNTSBURY RESIDENTS have every right to be super angry as our front page article reveals. They are enduring every neighbourhoods’ nightmare – hoons in cars. But these hoons are doing more than just burnouts. Noise, using properties as toilets, the list goes on. It’s most nights too. The police don’t appear to be doing too much about it, according to our inquiries. Residents say they have contacted the police. The advice: Ring 111 when incidents happen. That’s fair enough but the 111 system is designed for priority. So when other more serious or urgent incidents occur, the Huntsbury problem becomes less important. Now there’s a meeting planned between the community board, police and residents. Police should just go alone and enforce the law. There will be no complaints from residents. – Barry Clarke

News Child sex offender concern Meeting held by residents By Andrew King SOMERFIELD residents met on Thursday to discuss the placement of a convicted child sex offender in their community. It comes after schools and residents were told on May 29 about the offender being released from prison and who would soon be living near them. The meeting was organised by Labour MP for Port Hills Ruth Dyson (left) and included Somerfield Residents Association representatives and Department of Corrections staff. Ms Dyson labelled the meeting as “extremely positive.” “They have really tried to engage the community as much as possible. We were told it was the first time that Corrections have door-knocked residents to let

them know what is happening,” she said. She said she initially had doubts that police would be able to respond to any breaches of conditions, but said Corrections reassured her police would make it a “top priority.” Residents association chairwoman Julie Tobbell said it was good to allow the community to voice their concerns. “I will be looking to set up a meeting with concerned resi-
dents and Corrections at a later date once I find out how many people would be interested in it,” she said. No specific details about the offender were discussed at the meeting, Ms Tobbell said. The next time the residents association will meet is July 10, but Ms Tobbell said there could be another meeting set up if there was a large number of interested residents who wanted to attend.

Letters were sent to Somerfield, St Peter’s and Cashmere High schools. Corrections staff were also going door-to-door in Somerfield letting the community know.

In Brief FIRE RECOVERY PLAN Plans for Port Hills recovery work have been approved by the city council. Projects to deal with landslip mitigation, replanting and reducing the likelihood of sediment run-off into waterways are included in the Port Hills recovery plan. The plan also touches on the response to the fire itself and advises more education is done so people have a better understanding of the risk of wildfire and how they can protect themselves and their properties. PIECE OF THE PARK It has been part of the city’s history for more than a century, and now you have a chance to pick up a piece of Lancaster Park. The city council wants sporting and community groups to register their interest to acquire salvaged items from the earthquake-damaged stadium. The city council approved the deconstruction on the understanding as much material as possible would be salvaged. FUNDING APPROVED THe St Martins Bowls Club has had an $8000 funding application approved to go towards a new heating system. Members from the club have offered to assist with clean up and removal of the old system to lower installation costs.

Air rifle injury in A cAt Chanel, a beautiful 17 month old Birman arrived home late one Sunday evening with a profusely bleeding wound on her back. Her very concerned owners rushed her to the After hours clinic where she was placed on oxygen, given intravenous fluids and pain relief. The xray taken showed Chanel had been shot with two air rifle pellets – one was sitting in her abdomen and one in her left hind leg. She was also slightly anemic due to blood loss. Miraculously she was still alive. Chanel was operated on to remove the hind leg pellet that night but it was felt too risky to open her up and remove the abdominal pellet due to ongoing blood loss. Thankfully the pellets missed her vital organs and spine.
and about 60mls of blood was drawn from him to give to Chanel over a couple of hours. The donor cat has their red cell levels checked and must be Feline Aids (FIV) negative. The following day Chanel appeared brighter and happier. We decided to wait a further week before operating to make sure her blood levels were stable and that she was producing good numbers of red cells on her own. The repeated ultrasound and xray showed that thankfully her left kidney appeared normal however the bullet had slightly moved.
Chanel arrived at McMaster & Heap Vet Practice on Monday morning in a fairly critical condition. She was closely monitored and her pain medication with a fentanyl patch provided her with continuous relief – being shot would be quite sore! Chanel had regular blood tests in house to check her vital organs and to be sure her anemia wasn’t worsening. Unfortunately she was becoming more anemic. Kirsty performed an abdominal ultrasound and took chest xrays to check for free blood indicating an active bleed. There was also some concern about potential damage to her left kidney from the pellet location. Thankfully through all this her appetite was great! Prior to her second surgery, it was decided that Chanel would benefit from a blood transfusion to help her red blood cell levels. She was blood typed ( Type A) and found to be a match for Kirsty’s cat “Wolfie”. Wolfie was sedated
Help with handcuffs By Mark Thomas – Specialist Fire investigator HANDCUFFS SUGGEST policemen. So when a man walked into the Christchurch City Fire Station on the morning of June 2 asking to be helped out of a pair of handcuffs, some discreet calls were made to find out if our friends in blue had lost anyone that morning. It turns out the cuffs were the type available at certain ‘adult’ shops and the poor fellow had been ‘trying them on’. Ten minutes later he was on his way – handcuffs in pieces. Late on the same afternoon, crews were called by a passerby to a house in Northcote, where a smoke alarm could be heard. The house was found to be full of smoke, the result of a blanket close up against a log fire. There are some lessons here. The metre/heater rule applies to anything that might be hot – be it a fireplace, heater, stove or electrical appliance. In this case, it seems a centimetre/heater separation was all that had been left. It very nearly cost the occupiers their house. It also proves that smoke alarms save property as well as lives. Finally, it would’ve been so easy for the passerby to keep on walking or to think “it’s none of my business.” Another good neighbour in Conference

Chanel’s surgery proceeded without a hitch. The bullet was successfully removed with very little trauma, from just behind her left kidney. That afternoon she was rolling around, playing in her cage, able to be discharged from our hospital. We continued with pain relief and one week later Chanel was near normal. This would have been a completely different story had her abdominal organs been penetrated or her spine shattered. Thanks to her owner’s rapid response, Chanel’s life was saved and she’s never looked back. Also a bonus that her dedicated owners have pet insurance.

St called in to say they had seen smoke showing at a property. The responding firefighters dragged a person from the flat. 4K technology for St George’s
FROM HOLLYWOOD to the operating theatre – technology used in blockbuster movies is now being used to help Christchurch surgeons during operations. The 4k imaging technology has been incorporated in the five new operating theatres built as part of the redevelopment at St George’s Hospital. The technology has been used to film big screen movies, including the Hunger Games and Spectre. It produces a resolution four times higher than the traditional Full HD, making it possible to zoom in on the smallest details and magnify them. That will allow surgeons to watch what they are doing live on a screen during keyhole surgery, and zoom in as they work to see right to the individual blood vessels. Hospital chief executive Greg Brooks said the technology would directly benefit patients. “The redevelopment has provided us with a key opportunity to invest in worldleading innovation to provide our patients with superior care,” he said.

New lights to improve traffic flow, safety PEDESTRIAN SAFETY and traffic flow are being prioritised in Halswell. The city council is seeking public feedback on a new set of traffic lights at the intersection of Augustine Dr and Halswell Rd. Augustine Dr will flow into a new road, Monsaraz Boulevard, at the proposed lights. The proposed lights will link the Halswell Commons residential development, including the heritage park, with the historic Spreydon Lodge and SouthWest Village commercial centre. The proposed lights are set to replace the current pedestrian island on Halswell Rd, near Templetons Rd. Dancer to join national academy By Julia Evans A ST MARGARET’S College student who has been highland dancing since she was three has been selected as part of the national academy. Annabel Watts, 16, danced her way into a spot as one of the youngest members of the New Zealand Academy of Highland and National Dancing. “There are a few younger
people but there are a lot around 30,” she said. The auditions took place in the city at the beginning of April, which Annabel said was perfect having them “at home.” Annabel will join the company for its 2017 and 2018 season. “I could’ve done it last year but I decided school was more important,” she said. country, Annabel will also perform at the Virginia Tattoo arts festival. Now she has to focus on practising, which she does at least three times a week. A WOMAN who complained about noisy children in the Linwood Library has now gone to her local community board. Linwood resident Elizabeth Graham made a formal complaint to the library’s service centre on May 18 about “uncontrolled noise children are making in the library . . . ” The following week, she wrote to the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board after what she said was an “unsatisfactory response” from the library. She wants a warning notice put up advising library patrons of when the children’s sessions will be on each week. Her letter will be discussed at the board’s meeting tomorrow.

Plan to beat bad behaviour at bus lounge By Bridget Rutherford DISCONNECTING THE free Wi-Fi at the Riccarton bus lounge is one of many ideas being investigated to try and curb the antisocial behaviour plaguing the area. A working group, made up of city council staff, HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board members, and representatives from nearby businesses and Westfield Riccarton, has been formed to come up with ways to deal with the issue. Board chairman Mike Mora (left) said turning off the Wi-Fi was one idea the group was looking into, because a lot of youths loitered outside to use it. He said the group was looking at a range of other options, including installing security cameras, and the idea of creating an anti-loitering bylaw that would give police the power to move people on. “I don’t think one silver bullet is going to solve the issue,” Mr Mora said. “It’s a work in progress and we’re going to keep the momentum up.”
Since opening in 2015, the bus lounge had been a hot-spot for trouble-causing youths. Nearby businesses have had enough of them loitering and intimidating their customers. Community board member Debbie Mora said turning off the

Hillmorton High School year 9 students enjoyed a day outside the classroom recently, planting trees and shrubs at Halswell Quarry. It’s the second year the school has run the planting project. With the help of city council park rangers, the students successfully planted more than 400 plants. They also undertook a programme of learning while at the quarry, The event was timed to coincide with Arbor Day and Matariki.
STAR: Daniel Lovegrove earned the Barrington Kip McGrath Star of the Month for May. His tutors said Daniel always arrives at his class with a smile, having completed his homework to an excellent standard. His tutors said he is also motivated and a very hard worker in class and that he has made excellent progress during his time at Kip McGrath. ​

Huge Golden Oldies festival In just under a year, Christchurch will host the largest sporting event it has ever seen – but this one is more about having fun than winning. Bridget Rutherford reports THEY ENJOY social sport and a good after-match function. And next year, more than 10,000 Golden Oldies will come to Christchurch in the largest sporting event the city has ever seen. The aim? Fun, friendship and fraternity. The Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration will run throughout April at different locations in the city. But this event, organised by sport event management, tour and travel company Vintage Sport and Leisure, will be different to any others in Golden Oldies’ history. Vintage Sport and Leisure chief executive Peter McDermott said it was designed especially for the city following the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes. “[Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority] asked if we could do something that would be a bit different and encouraging for people to learn that Christchurch, despite its problems, was well and truly regenerating.” Normally, Golden Oldies’ tournaments for each sport are held in different international cities every two years. But come April, the event will combine 10 different sports. Lawn bowls, golf, squash, football and basketball are new, while the traditional rugby, cricket, netball, hockey and softball will feature as well. “We’ve never done 10 sports in one place. This is designed specially for Christchurch,” Mr

McDermott said. “We anticipate about 10,000 participants, of which probably 75 per cent to 80 per cent will come from overseas or outside of Christchurch.” Hagley Park will be the event hub, with rugby, cricket, football and netball played there. Nunweek Park, Cowles Stadium, Mizuno Ballpark and Papanui Bowling Club will host the other codes, with golf being played across Harewood, Christchurch, Pegasus and Terrace Downs golf clubs. The squash venue will be finalised soon. Mr McDermott said although Golden Oldies was open to anyone over 35, the bulk of participants were between 45-65. Most participants were from New Zealand and Australia. But competitors from Japan, Russia, the United States, Canada, England and Ireland will make the journey as well. The oldest rugby player who had taken part was 87, while at
last year’s Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival in Cardiff there were 10 players aged over 80. It’s not just the sport they come for. “They’re a very social group,” Mr McDermott said. “They enjoy their sport and to mix and mingle and meet other people.” The event is expected to bring $33 million of direct economic benefit to Canterbury. “Based on our past history, they are big spenders on entertainment, food and beverage, and retail.” Canterbury Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said the city now had the infrastructure to accommodate an event of this magnitude. “It will have a very positive economic impact,” he said. “We’re going to have a massive influx of people who will be able to see first-hand what stage we are at recreating our city, and how good it’s all starting to look, and they will go away and tell their friends and family what is
on offer here. That will be a huge stimulus for the city.” City councillor Tim Scandrett said those attending were generally big spenders and it was great to be able to showcase postquake Christchurch. “It’s really important to show that we are back up and running.” For some participants, Golden Oldies isn’t their first taste of international competition. Previously, it has attracted ex-internationals such as Brumbies coach and former Wallaby Stephen Larkham, former All Black prop Greg Somerville and West Indies cricketing legend Joel Garner. But Mr McDermott said that didn’t intimidate other competitors. In fact, it was quite the opposite. “They love it.” At one event, Larkham played 10min for every team and 10min against so everyone got to play with and against him, Mr McDermott said. It was too early to

say whether there would be any familiar faces playing next year. But Mr McDermott said Garner was likely to attend, although he was not expected to take to the pitch. Although most of the games were social, there were still heated rivalries. “There are rivalries, some teams come back frequently. The Australian and Kiwis have a good, friendly rivalry, but they like to have the bragging rights.” And sometimes, there is an opportunity to win a world record. At Cardiff’s Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival, participants broke the Guinness World Record for the largest scrum. Welsh referee Nigel Owens officiated the scrum, which was made up of 1300 people. “We’re looking for ideas to do something similar in Christchurch,” Mr McDermott said. He said it would “probably” be the first and last time the Golden Oldies’ event will be held in this format, because it was difficult to find a city that could host every code. Cashmere well rested ahead of Shirley clash By Andrew King CASHMERE WILL look to pick up where they left off when they face Shirley in the Connetics first XI football competition tomorrow night. The game, which will take place at the Christchurch Football Centre at 7.30pm, will be a chance for Cashmere to push back into the top four after sitting out round 6 with a bye. If other results go their way, they could sit on top of the table again. However, St Thomas would have to draw with Burnside, St Andrew’s would have to lose against Riccarton and Lincoln would have to lose against Papanui for that to happen. In round 5, Cashmere got back into their goal scoring way with a 6-2 victory over Riccarton. Cashmere coach Craig Squire said the competition is close with very few points separating the top seven sides. The key is to keep clean sheets and stay fresh, he said. “The boys have been in need of a rest as they are playing a large amount of football through school and club teams. This week off has allowed the team to refresh for the game this week against Shirley.” The team had minimal training sessions last week to try and

RANGI RURU’S first XI hockey team have won the Pat Barwick Shield for the first time in the school’s history with a great second half performance against Villa Maria on Friday night. The shield was named after Barwick, a former Black Sticks women’s captain from 1971-79, and came into existence in 2014. It is considered the Ranfurly Shield of high school women’s hockey. The first half of the game was a feeling out period at Marist Park. With Rangi slow out of the blocks, they found themselves defending a penalty corner within minutes of the first whistle.
They turned it around in the second half, finding the back of the net four times to win the shield off their nearby rivals. It was presented to captain Annabelle Wilson by Barwick herself. Rangi director of sport Jo Fogarty said it was a real buzz to have the shield on the line and they look forward to seeing who will challenge them for it first. The shield has to be challenged for by schools, it is not automatically on the line when playing the holder. Three challenges must be made each season. “We cannot wait to see who will take us on for it next,” Fogarty said.

MANDARINS IN CARAMEL SAUCE Ingredients 8 Mandarins 1 cup Caster sugar 1 cup Water 1 handful Mint leaves, to ganish 1 pot Creme fraiche, to serve Directions Peel mandarins and set aside. Into a small pot place sugar and water. Slowly bring to a simmer and continue to cook for 10-15 minutes until mixture starts to turn a caramel colour. At this stage keep a close eye on it. It will brown very quickly. When it is a caramel colour remove from heat and add ¼-½ cup water. It may spit a bit at you, so do this carefully. Stir until syrup is clear. Cool. Place mandarins in glasses and pour over caramel sauce. Decorate with mint leaves and serve creme fraiche on the side. SILVERBEET WITH PUMPKIN, PINENUTS AND LENTILS
Ingredients 500g Pumpkin, peeled and sliced 2 tsp Brown sugar 1 Tbsp Butter, melted 1 Tbsp Sherry vinegar 3 Tbsp Olive oil ½ tsp Nutmeg, (freshly grated) 2 Tbsp Pine nuts 3 stalks Silverbeet 1 cup Brown lentils, cooked Directions Preheat the oven to 180deg C. In a large bowl, add the

Heat a large frying pan, add one Tbsp of olive oil and then the silverbeet, season and stir-fry for 10 minutes. To serve, plate the pumpkin, alternating with

Directions Preheat oven to 170deg C. Beat the butter and sugar until pale and creamy, add the egg and beat well. Mix in flour and one tablespoon of grated lemon rind.
